Vatican City. Br. Raniero Cantalamessa, who was created cardinal on November 28th, continues to hold his position as the Preacher of the Papal Household. As usual during the seasons of Advent, he addressed weekly meditations to the Pope and to the members of the Roman Curia. The last of these was delivered on December 18th, completing the forty-first set of Advent reflections since he was appointed in 1980.
The meditations he preached this Advent 2020 did not take place at Redemptoris Mater Chapel as usual, but for medical reasons of distancing, in the Paul VI Audience Hall in the Vatican. This change of location allowed for the participation of some personally invited faithful in addition to the Pope, Cardinals and various Vatican officials.
Also, this year, all three meditations were broadcast on both radio and TV; and can also be found on the internet.
With Br. Raniero’s consent, we have made the texts of all three meditations available to the friars with translations into five languages.
“Teach us to count our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.” (Psalm 90:12)
The Pandemic: an opportunity to reflect on some eternal truths.
“The Lord – wrote St. Gregory the Great – sometimes instructs us with words, and at other times with deeds” – Homilies on the Gospels, XVII.
During this year marked by the terrible scourge of the Coronavirus, we strive to search for any meaning we can find as people of faith.
We are invited to reflect on certain eternal truths in the wake of these sad events:
- First: We are all mortal and we have no permanent home down here.
- Second: The life of the believer does not end with death, because there is an eternal life that awaits us.
- Third: We are not abandoned and alone on this little boat that is our planet, because “The Word became flesh and dwelled among us”.
